Title: Learning about and from the Holocaust in Japan

Author: Fumiko Ishioka, Director, Tokyo Holocaust Education Resource Center (Japan)

Abstract: Through our outreach programs, Tokyo Holocaust Education Resource Center (Kokoro) has given workshops at over 1,200 schools to raise human rights awareness and educate students about mutual respect using the lessons of the Holocaust. By studying the historical development of the Holocaust, students are encouraged to examine racism and prejudice and explore human nature. Culture of remembrance in today’s Germany has also sparked conversation among students on the importance of learning from the past including Japanese aggression in Asia.
